Elounda is located 10 km north of Agios
Nikolaos. It is not a very pretty village but its superb location
at the head of the peninsula of Spinalonga and the lagoon that it
creates have made it extremely popular. This is further enhanced
by the island of Kalidon on which the remains of a Venetian fortress
that later was to become a leper colony are located.
Getting there is easy from Agios Nikolaos
Atmosphere: The village has a number
of restaurants and shops but is also very much a through place
for excursions to the island of Spinalonga / Kalidon so it feels
busy without much atmosphere.
Accommodation: a number of hotels and
rooms in the village itself. Further out towards Agios Nikolaos are
several of Crete's most luxurious hotels.
Nightlife: a few bars and cafés
Beach: the beaches of Elounda are not
terribly good, essentially narrow strips of sand that are often
overcrowded. The lagoon is very shallow and the water is generally
always very still. Good for small children.
