Ierapetra proudly calls itself Europe's
southernmost town. With a population of over 12.000 it is the only
town in South Crete.
Ierapetra became very prosperous because it
was the centre of the regions agriculture, predominantly greenhouses
producing fruit and vegetable for export to northern Europe. Ierapetra
is a working town and tourism only plays a very marginal role.
Getting there: regular buses from Agios
Nikolaos as well as Sitia.
Atmosphere: busy small town. The promenade along
the sea front is a lively place with many cafés, restaurants and bars.
Accommodation: nowadays, you will find
many hotels in all price classes.
Restaurants: excellent choice on the sea
front but some can be a little expensive.
Shopping: a lot of shops
Nightlife: is limited to a few bars and
a couple of discos.
Beach: The grey sandy beach starts more
or less in the center of town and extends a couple of km towards
the East. Not a great beach but OK.
