The village of Plaka is located in the stunning setting of the Mirabello bay, right opposite the island of Kalidon (Spinalonga). It used to be a tiny fishing village and only a few years ago was frequented only by a few individualistic travellers. This has changed and a number of hotels and tavernas have sprung up but it is still a really nice and quiet place and will hopefully remain so for a few more years.
Getting there: public buses are limited, at the most 2 or 3 times a day from Elounda 5 km away. With a car it's a straightforward drive along the scenic road from Agios Nikolaos
Atmosphere Perfect place if you are looking for a quiet tourist resort but too close to Elounda and Agios Nikolaos if you are looking for a holiday away from the touristic mainstream.
Accommodation a few apartments and studios (more and more) as well as the large Blue Palace Resort and Spa at the southern end of the village.
Restaurants: good choice of tavernas in the centre of the village
Beach: The two pebble beach are not too great but beautifully located.
Excursions to the old leper colony of Spinalonga can be arranged from Plaka if you want to avoid the crowds from Elounda
